Why Programmers Make The Move

We Know Why You're
Reading This Right Now.

Based on real conversations with CNC programmers across the region, the same story comes up again and again. If any of this sounds familiar, keep reading.

📈
You've Stopped Growing
You're doing the same work you were doing 18 months ago. No new challenges, no new skills. The ceiling is real and it's low.
"I'm not learning anything new here."
⚙️
Same Machines. Same Limitations.
The equipment hasn't changed in years and nobody's looking to change it. You've learned to program around the limitations instead of push past them. You know what's possible — you're just not given what you need to get there.
"I spend more time working around the machine than I do actually programming."
🧱
That's Just How We Do It
You've found a better way. You've brought it up. The answer is always the same — this is how it's always been done and nobody's interested in changing it. So you go back to doing it the old way.
"I stopped bringing ideas up. Nobody was listening anyway."

What This Role
Actually Is

The Reality

At GVM you're not just writing code. You're part of the conversations before a job is accepted, on the floor when it runs, and get to be part of making it better. Complex milling and turning work for industries where the parts actually matter — defense, aerospace, nuclear. That's what's on your plate every day.

You'll Be Responsible For

  • Building and simulating toolpaths in Esprit CAM, communicating all checkpoints to operators through the programming interface
  • Preparing 3D models and stock models in SolidWorks from customer drawings, CAD files, and incoming materials
  • Developing tooling plans with plant managers, procuring tooling, and designing or modifying jigs and fixtures as needed
  • Generating and troubleshooting G-code for accuracy
  • Assisting shop floors in multiple plants in machine set-up and process troubleshooting
  • Researching and recommending new tooling, equipment, and software
  • Participating in pre-production planning and project management as needed

What You Bring

  • Associate's degree in CNC programming with 3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience
  • Proficient in CAM software and 3D modeling — SolidWorks and Esprit a strong plus
  • Ability to read blueprints, G-code, and GD&T
  • Strong math skills — geometry and trigonometry
  • Mechanical and technical knowledge of machining equipment including speeds and feeds
  • Ability to convey complex technical information clearly to operators and management
  • Experience operating a CNC machine a plus, not required

Not the Right Fit If:

  • You've only edited or loaded programs someone else wrote
  • You rely on others for tooling, process, or setup decisions
  • You want a role completely disconnected from the shop floor

Strong Fit If:

  • You can program a job from start to finish independently
  • You understand machining beyond just CAD/CAM — tooling, feeds, speeds, and materials
  • You want more ownership and responsibility, not less

Why Grand Valley

A Shop That Demands
Real Programming Skill.

GVM isn't a shop running the same parts. The work requires programmers who actually understand machining — and rewards people who take ownership of it.

🏭

Work That Challenges You

Every part is different. High-tolerance components for defense, aerospace, transportation, nuclear and more. From small components up to parts 70 feet long. Your skillset will grow here because the work demands it.

🔧

Real Ownership.

At GVM, programmers are typically brought into the conversation before a job is even accepted. Your input shapes how it gets done from the start — not after all the decisions have already been made.

📈

There's a Next Level Here.

GVM promotes from within. People who started on machines are now running plants. If you're good and you want more responsibility, the path exists. This isn't a place you outgrow.

🤝

Nobody Says "That's Not My Job."

You'll work alongside people who show up, take pride in the work, and do what it takes. From the floor to ownership, everybody's in it.

⚡

The Industry Is Changing. You'll Be Part of It.

GVM is expanding into robotic automation and other technologies. If you want to grow into the next generation of manufacturing technology, the work is already here. You won't be watching it happen somewhere else.

💰

Paid Like the Skilled Professional You Are.

Compensation here is serious. Full benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, and paid time off.
